I'm interested in
representing the perceptions one gets from a scene rather
than the detail contained within it. Good drafting is an
essential part of this process but only in so much that it
creates an architecture or a spacial framework for the
colour and texture, the tonal contrasts, and the hard or
soft edges of the composition to sit within. I think that
the allure of a successful painting is in what it suggests
rather than what it shows clearly. I try to think of
colours as relationships between one another rather than
isolated swatches on a colour wheel or paint tube. I
am constantly seeking clear painted strokes and all the
other ways of making a painterly mark. These marks are my
friends when they fight my cause, but my foe when they
conspire against me in my regular warfare on the canvases'
battlefield. Living on the river in Putney provides easy
access to a wealth of subject matter, much of which I
include in my early oil paintings.
